Raymond Carver
Raymond Carver (1939-1988) was a poet, essayist, a lecturer in English and creative writing, but above all, author of short stories, which are collected in books Will You Please Be Quiet, Please? (1979), What We talk About When We talk About Love (1981), Cathedral (1983), ... American history is not divided into the one before and after Carver, but certainly the art of short story writing after Raymond Carver is not what it used to be before him any more. From the accompanying text
Carver's biography is that of a convalescent alcoholic, who had behind him four unsuccessful attempts to come off the "selective drug" in the working class, to finally, with relief and a feeling of true victory, stop that utter dependence. He later on made a dry remark: "To put it simple, it was literally killing me." This liquefied biography left a indelible mark on his literary work. After all, alcohol plays an important role in his stories.
