About the Book

Where Are We is an encyclopedic novel—a blend of essay, rhetorical exercise, verse, and plot, as well as a parody of the romance novel. It is a deconstruction of all genres, a process of fragmentation and reassembly.

The writer enters into dialogue with historical and intimate figures, who tell their stories through her voice—above all, the story of Ljubljana: how they arrived there, how Ljubljana changed them, and how they, in turn, changed Ljubljana. Their memories gradually piece together the story of a city that carries European history and thought; their knowledge slowly accumulates and is assembled into an Argonauts’ ship that brings us the tale of the “Ljubljana elephant,” of a Roman woman in Emona, and the stories of Gustav Mahler, Medea, and ultimately—the writer herself.
