About the Book

With Letters from the Field, Esad Babačić and Goran Vojnović fill in the blank pages we have left unwritten in our relationships—partly thanks to the successes of our athletes. Instead of confronting our own feelings, we surrendered to their stories: victories, defeats, struggles on the field. In doing so, these stories filled a void from which many things might have grown, had they not served as a substitute for our own emotional lives.

The correspondence, which took place in 2024, was tied to the NBA playoffs, the Slovenian national football team’s appearance at the European Championship in Germany, the Tour de France, and the Summer Olympic Games in Paris. Sport is one of the strongest bonds between the two authors, alongside literature, yet the letters are not an exchange of sporting impressions or expressions, but a dialogue about life—one permeated by, and at times almost saturated with, sport. It is an intensely intimate conversation between two kindred spirits, as befits letters.
